The Perspective of Adolescents Attending a Multidisciplinary Weight Management Service (#249)

Objective: Understanding consumers’ perspective is important to ensure that service delivery meets the need and expectation of the individuals accessing the service. This study aims to explore the perspectives of adolescents on receiving multidisciplinary clinical care for weight management.

 

Methods: A qualitative study using semi-structured interviews explored the perspectives of adolescent affected by obesity who had received weight management services through the Growing Healthy Kids Service (GHK). Interview were conducted between October 2022 and April 2023 by non-treating clinicians. Interview was digitally audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim.  Thematic analysis was completed in NVIVO by three independent researchers.

 

Results: A total of 22 adolescents completed the semi-structured interview, 15 of which were males.  Four main themes were identified in relation to adolescent perspectives on receiving the GHK Service, including (i) initial impressions (ii) service delivery (iii) Impact (iv) Service recommendations. Participants found the service effective and had positive impact on their lifestyle. It highlights the significance of individualised interventions and supportive environment and participants value of continue support.

 

Conclusion:  This study demonstrates the benefit of multidisciplinary approach with emphasises on individualised intervention and support to meet the needs of adolescents. There is a need for extended access to weight management service and flexible modality of care. Understanding and addressing these themes can contribute to the continued success and improvement of the GHK service and similar health programs.
