Carsten Schmitz-Peiffer

A/Prof Carsten Schmitz-Peiffer is a Principal Research Fellow and group leader at the Charles Perkins Centre, University of Sydney. He primarily investigates mechanisms of lipid-induced insulin resistance, a key aspect of Type 2 Diabetes. His earlier work highlighted the importance of protein kinase C (PKC) and of ceramide, and more recently he has demonstrated diverse roles for PKC in different tissues such as skeletal muscle, adipose tissue and the hypothalamus. Current work addresses the mechanisms involved, using state-of-the-art proteomics and lipidomics. He has worked on projects with several pharma and biotech companies and currently collaborates with medicinal chemists to develop novel PKC inhibitors for the treatment of diabetes. A/Prof Schmitz-Peiffer graduated from the University of Cambridge, UK, with honours in Natural Sciences (Biochemistry) and received a PhD in from the University of Bristol, UK. He is a member of the senior faculty at the School of Life and Environmental Sciences, University of Sydney. He is also a Visiting Scientist at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and holds a conjoint appointment as Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine, UNSW.
